And so it was that, on hearing the news of the murky tragedy, the Christ of Minas came to life. He suddenly let go of the cedar cross; ran among the -inhos, bearing an equivalent weight; reached the rupture-center and stood dumbfounded. It did not seem like chance to him; from the murmurs he gathered contempt-suffering. He wept a necrotear. And, with his mouth closed, he screamed in thought:
Blessed are those who erase people, the environment, and what belongs to others so they can act with absolute contempt; the spawn of legal fiction who spit on the dignity of others, in the public square, with their profitable cynicism and vile talk. Other people’s family tragedies are leverage. And those others—the poor, the drowned, crushed here and humiliated ever after—are surely denied any sign of blessedness. Peace and dignity are for scoundrels alone.

Ce fut à l’annonce de la turbidité de la tragédie que le Christ Mineiro prit vie. Il lâcha d’un coup la croix de cèdre ; il courut entre les inhos, sous un pareil poids ; il parvint au rupticentre et y demeura abasourdi. Rien de cela ne lui semblait relever du hasard ; dans cette rumeur se lisait un mépris-souffrance. Il pleura nécrolarme. Et, bouche close, il criait :
Bienheureux ceux qui effacent les gens, le milieu et les choses d’autrui pour agir au nom du rien-à-foutre ; les rejetons de la fiction juridique qui crachent, pissent, chient dans la bouche d’autrui, en pleine place publique, avec leur cynisme rentable et leur parlure idiote : le malheur dans la famille des autres leur sert de levier. Et à ces autres — pauvres, noyés, foutus ici, et désormais, pour comble, humiliés — nul signe ne leur est donné qu’ils soient du nombre des bienheureux. Paix et dignité, ça ne vaut que pour les fils de pute.
